Yes, we know many of these apps are not directly comparable. It's likely that next year we'll break the category up (perhaps into Raster and Vector) and do one rotating graphic-related poll per year. Feedback on the topic is welcome.
Even two groupings would probably not work. Raster applications have a few different targets and some of them may be directed towards conversion to vector images. Vector drawing tools also have a range of targets such as full CAD drawings or simple diagrams.
If anything changes made to applications such as GIMP is destroying their usability by trying to make them more 'general' tools so now preventing selecting them here.
Too difficult to choose just one, but Krita has made a lot of progress this year so I voted for it. I basically use most of these listed both at work and at home. I would give most of them a vote if I could.
Don't see GraphicsMagick listed. I've started using it in place of ImageMagick. I also like i.Mage. GrafX2 is great for lightweight, older systems and RawTherapee is also nice if you have more horsepower. GLE is useful for drawing graphs. For vector graphics, figurine is interesting and lightweight.
I like gimp for image editing. But alas it still doesn't supports 16bit and higher per channel color depth editing. So photo editing losses clarity. Hope gimp-2.10 gets released early atleast in year 2016.
I work with pretty much only RAW files from my dslr, and for that, rawtherapee is phenomenal.
I wouldn't work with anything else for RAW.
