What were the most common technical Linux issues in 2016?

For the final The Queue of the year, I plan to post a summary of the most common Linux problems of 2016 along with a solution to each. What do you think the most common Linux issue(s) of 2016 were?

I hope the most common one in 2017 is VR.

Broadcom/Realtek wireless has been one that I've seen here quite frequently. Another is printer drivers, especially for Canons. I gather that Canon drivers for Linux are more readily available at Canon's non-US websites than at their US site.

I agree that pebkac is a problem, but it's not a "Linux" problem . . . .

install/boot (solution: maybe boot-repair-disk.iso ?ALWAYS? fixes 'it'! )
pkg (solution: maybe 'clean-up' cmds[?] e.g. this)

my src: search: problem* TitlesOnly, >20replys, from A yr, Show as Threads, Linux Forums

Yes, a lot [?half?] of lq are some degree of 'pebkac' (&a few are total wastes)
My pebkac solution suggestion: 'Post New Thread' could maybe say/ask #1/#2:
Provide way/steps to *reproduce* this. What keywords were used in web-research?

Given the clear 'way to reproduce problem', as bug reporting asks,
the solution becomes clear. (this is an ok -v of: 'what thex did YOUx DO?')

OT: my suggested solution: a [polite-jail] Forum for ?s that need Level-0 help (clarification).
(Not sure who'd incarcerate/release such 'expert_time-waste' Threads. OT=NOreplyHERE!)

This guy has listed almost all the problems with Linux desktop.

1) In my personal experience. I found many Linux applications lack the getting-things-done nature of MS applications.

Eg. I did not find a good paint program replacement for Linux that had all the functions of classic MS-paint. They all lacked one or the other basic feature.

2) Quality and Quantity application is missing for Linux. In Android and Windows 10 world, all the applications should be available in Linux Software Store as well.

3) No sound mixer settings in desktop sound. I had to download pulseaudio mixer application, which did the work.

4) With Ubuntu 16.04 had lot of issues getting GUI desktop functional. I had to run 'startx' everytime and only LXDE worked. Finally got it working after using all of the workaround available on internet. Do not know which one worked.

5) Games in the Ubuntu Software do not run well even on my intel i7. I did not try "STEAM" games yet.

I am currently using Ubuntu 16.04 as my only desktop as my Windows is full of Virus.

I agree, pebkac (and not rtfm'ing) is a big problem on LQ and IRL where I work. People cannot accept that troubleshooting steps differ between computer platforms (and I say that to include three major OS's).

I'd say understanding how sound works is still a problem.

Understanding how drivers and firmware work is a problem.

Well, at least it wasn't ns2. That was a real plague for a few years.

File sharing between android phones and linux.

Using your android or apple iphone cell phone as a wifi hot spot in linux.

I have no problem with either. But I am not the usual computer operator either, it seems.

1) Wayland, Mir, and X.org growing pains. Linux has been through this before. Anyone remember Xfree86?

2) Driver issues: The latest mess of AMD video drivers, mainly the newer Radeon cards. Nvidia has had its share of Linux driver problems as well. Broadcom / Realtek WiFi driver problems.

3) The out of control bloat in the major Linux Desktop Environments. It shouldn't require 1GB or more just run a desktop.

4) The chaos, bad design, and feature creap of systemd. Systemd is about as problematic as the registry in Windows.

5) Legal issues that involve non free software, drivers and firmware.

I have to go with the old standard video

I have had issues with hardware going out of support with nVidia and had to patch the install, and reading about the fun people are having with AMD backs up my statement (I had high hopes for AMD).

But seems ever so slowly, nouveau made some progress, alas still minor issues on one machine, but working better on that machine. Hoping nouveau wins the race so I do not have to worry about out of support nVidia drivers.
