A couple comments:

* We do realize that some polls have nominees that are not directly comparable. There are over 35 polls. If we got down to the granularity some members would like to see, there would be 100's if not 1000's of polls. That would be a net decline in the usefulness of the awards IMHO. We try to strike the best balance we can, and do modify the polls and nominees every year, based on feedback. If you have any suggestions on how the polls can be improved, do let us know. NOTE: We made more changes this year than any previous year, and feedback is welcome.

* There are no set in stone guidelines for voting. Our recommendation is to base your vote on which application you found most valuable to you in 2016, along with which project you feel made the largest improvements in 2016. That being said, in the end the criteria is up to you.

* Posting a comment is optional, but do be aware that for your vote to count you have to select an option and click the "Vote Now" button (regardless of whether you have left a comment or not).

* You must have at least one post to be able to vote.

* All polls will close on February 7th at 12PM LQST.

* Results are not available until after the polls close.

Did I miss one? Where is the actual cloud creation stuff like OpenStack, RDO, Cloudstack, Crowbar etc? Or did it get canned?

I didn't see Unitrends in the list. Is this limited to open source solutions?

Suggestions for additions to categories should be made in the thread for that category. That said, unless "Open Source" appears in the category name, being open source is not a prerequisite. Running natively on Linux is always a prerequisite. Looking at Unitrends, it's probably not a good fit for the Backup category.

I'm not clear on why it would not be a good fit for backup. Their backup appliances run Centos 6, as do the VMs which run on XenServer as well as VMWare and Hyper-V. Additionally, their software can be installed on a physical machine running a compatible Linux.

An honest question: looking at the products/project in the category, would you consider it a good fit?

Did I see a transcoder app in the voting? I forget, anyway, I'm using FF Multi Converter in PCLinuxOS (other transcoders have backwards codecs/transcoding limitations) to 'down-code' more modern file-types/codecs to Mpeg2 so I can play them with a used Walmart DVD player I bought that has a USB port on the front. This is a lifesaver as DVDs and cases can get very expensive for processing/watching TV shows. Cable did come with the apartment but the ***hole upstairs had a mental episode and yanked it, so now I get better content off the internet without the commercials, he did me a favour.

Oh, one more, I also have Kodi in PCLinuxOS (Kodi works quite well if it's set up right), if I remember correctly, I haven't seen it in the Debian/Debian based repos, stable anyway, It's in the Sid repo, that I know. Was there a free TV over IP app category?

Devuan is my backup/writing (as in fiction author) non-systemd installed OS (on the second SSD), I voted Devuan for distro of the year.

BackupPC and Backula are similar in interface, and it offers much the same functionality as Clonezilla and other DR type solutions. It is a more complete solution, which makes it more complex (and expensive) than others in the list, so in the sense that it's not a good home/single user backup solution I can see it not fitting.

I'd like a graphics authoring/photography category as well. I've recently gotten into photography and have found RawTherapee to be a great application for processing RAW photos. I'm also a long-time fan of GIMP and Inkscape vector graphics. Blender's a powerful application too, but I bit too complicated for me to really use it that much sadly.
